My identity and the experiences that shaped it

As I stand on the threshold of my eighties, I look back with a sense of gratitude. I realize that everything I have learned throughout my life serves a purpose. The trials I faced shaped my understanding of compassion and empathy, allowing me to connect with others on a deeper level. My successes, while fulfilling, taught me humility and the importance of sharing my achievements with those who supported me along the way. Each relationship I nurtured and every risk I took—of which there were many—prompted me to reflect on my younger self and wonder if all of this was necessary to learn how to embrace life with open arms, ready to impart wisdom and love to future generations.

I no longer concern myself with who I am meant to become. I understand that each of my past decisions has contributed to the person I am today. For the first time, the person in the mirror looks back at me and says, "You have arrived!"

Your Journey, Your Decision, it is necessary!!!
Your Journey, Your Decision, it is necessary!!!

Throughout my life, I have made endless decisions without much consideration for their impact on the person I would become—like choosing to wear a mini skirt at a family gathering. There were a myriad of decisions, some seemingly trivial (like that time I decided to eat an entire pint of ice cream by myself) and others monumental (like that time I went joyriding without knowing the distance or the people in the car ). Little did I know how profoundly they would shape me! Some of the choices, whether made in haste or with the careful consideration of a squirrel deciding which tree to climb, contributed to the intricate tapestry of my existence. And let's be honest, some of these choices were not the best; they led me down winding paths filled with obstacles and challenges—like trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions. I understand that each of these experiences, both good and bad, was necessary for my journey that lay ahead of me, like a GPS that keeps rerouting because I missed the exit. There were many decisions; some were driven by immediate gratification (like that extra slice of pizza ) or the influence of those around me (who knew that peer pressure could convince me to try karaoke?). Others were aimed at making my parents proud of me—like when I finally figured out how to cook without setting off the smoke alarm. Decisions about friendships, career paths, and even personal values were made in the heat of the moment, often without the foresight of their long-term implications. Yet, as I mature and gain wisdom throughout the years (or at least that’s what I tell myself while staring at the ceiling at 3 AM), I begin to see the threads connecting these seemingly random choices. Each misstep became a lesson, each setback an opportunity for growth—like that time I learned that trying to impress someone with my dance moves, I had some moves, luckily.

Each decision is not about the choice I made, but the fact that I made the best decision at that time—even if that decision was to wear gym clothes to a job interview. Learning resilience, adaptability, and the importance of self-reflection has become a cornerstone of developing my character, and also a great way to explain why I still can’t cook without burning something. Making a decision, regardless of the outcome, is a continuous process of becoming oneself, yet we often fear or postpone making them.

The shaping of your identity.
The shaping of your identity.

Some of us will reach this stage in life sooner than others, while some may never be satisfied with who they have become. I embrace what belongs to me in the present. If tomorrow brings changes, I must be flexible, for it is all necessary.

Ultimately, I have come to appreciate that my life is not merely a collection of choices but a profound journey of self-discovery and transformation. As I reflect on my past, I am filled with a sense of purpose, knowing that every experience has played a vital role in shaping my destiny. I realize now that every decision we make changes our lives in ways we may not fully comprehend until the journey takes a new direction. This understanding brings me peace as I navigate the twilight years of my life, confident that I have lived fully and authentically and that my legacy will inspire others to embrace their journeys with courage and conviction. Will there be another journey for me? I surely hope so!!!!

Although I wrote this blog for younger readers who may question their decisions, it's essential to remember that this process is necessary for your development. I know now that decisions are made throughout our lives. One of the continents, as we age, is how to embrace change.
